Mastering the Punch Shot: A Must-Have Skill for Every Golfer

A punch shot is an essential tool in every golfer’s bag. Whether you’re playing in windy conditions, escaping trouble, or simply looking for a reliable backup swing, this low-trajectory shot can help you navigate tough situations on the course.

In this guide, Leslie Cloots, PGA and LPGA Professional, explains what a punch shot is, why it’s important, and how you can execute it with precision.

What is a Punch Shot?

A punch shot is a low-flying golf shot designed to keep the ball under control and minimize the impact of wind or obstacles. The key is to reduce the ball’s height while maintaining solid contact and accuracy.

Why is the Punch Shot Important?

There are three key scenarios where a punch shot can save your round:

1️⃣ Playing in Windy Conditions – A lower ball flight helps you keep the shot stable and prevents the wind from pushing it off target.

2️⃣ Escaping Trouble (Trees & Obstacles) – When you’re in the trees, a punch shot helps you keep the ball below branches and safely back onto the fairway.

3️⃣ A Reliable Backup Swing – If your regular swing isn’t working that day, a punch shot is a go-to alternative that provides control and consistency under pressure.

How to Hit a Punch Shot in 6 Easy Steps

1. Choose the Right Club

For a standard punch shot, grab a 6-iron (or a lower-lofted club, depending on your situation).

2. Grip Down on the Club

Choke down about two inches on the grip. This shortens the club, giving you more control over the shot.

3. Ball Position: Slightly Back in Your Stance

Move the ball about two inches back from your normal position. This promotes a downward strike and helps keep the ball low.

4. Lean Forward & Stay on Your Front Foot

At address, shift your weight slightly toward your lead foot and maintain this position throughout the swing.

5. Shorten Your Backswing

Think of your backswing as a ¾ swing—for most golfers, this feels like bringing the club back to chest height.

6. Abbreviate Your Follow-Through

After impact, slam the brakes on your finish, keeping the club below shoulder height. This keeps the ball low and in control.

Final Thoughts: When to Use the Punch Shot

The punch shot isn’t just a recovery tool—it’s a versatile shot that can help you in many different scenarios. Practicing this shot will give you confidence in tough conditions and add another weapon to your golf game.
